Nage-waza (Throwing techniques) and Katame-waza (Grappling techniques) are the two main categories. Nage-waza is part of Tachi-waza (Standup) with Sutemi-waza (Sacrifice throw). Katame-waza is part of Ne-waza (Groundwork) with Shime-waza (Strangulation techniques), Kansetsu-waza (Joint lock techniques), and Osaekomi-waza (pin/hold techniques).

Feature: Ude hishigi juji gatame (armbar).
In the Ude-hishigi-juji-gatame (armbar) Waza, Tori (Player executing technique) scissors one of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) arms between his thighs, and pulls it to bend the entire arm. Note: Green Belt (Gokyu rank) technique at my dojo in the United States.

Feature: Harai-goshi (Hip sweep).
The Harai-goshi (Hip sweep) destabilizes the opponent's balance in the forward direction, then sweeps his legs out from under him in a sudden motion. Note: Blue Belt (Yonkyu rank) technique at my dojo in the United States.

Feature: Kataha-jime (Single-wing strangle).
In the Kataha-jime (Single-wing strangle) Waza, Tori (Player executing technique) traps one of Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) arms and then uses both arms in tandem to strangle Uke (Player receiving opponent's attack) neck.
